Qatar has a compact British curriculum sector concentrated in and around Doha, which means word of mouth travels fast and a bad teacher is known quickly. It also means the pool of local physics specialists is genuinely small, and families end up choosing between a school teacher doing extra hours and an overseas online teacher.
The thing to test in that choice is not enthusiasm, it is exam technique. Physics in Doha is not usually lost on understanding. It is lost on the six-mark written answers, on the practical paper, and on students who can solve a problem but cannot write the answer the mark scheme is looking for.
Six things to check before you choose
The sites that rank first for physics tutors in Doha are listings anyone can join. Position on those pages reflects the site's search visibility, not the teacher's results.
Doha British curriculum schools sit Cambridge 0625 or Edexcel 4PH1. Ask your school which, and ask the teacher whether they teach that specific one.
Doha schools compress a lot into short terms. Every class here is recorded, so a clash moves the lesson rather than deleting it.
This is where Qatari students most often lose the grade. Ask to see a marked student answer with the mark scheme points against it.
A recorded lecture to eighty people is a video, not a class. Ask how many students are in the room and whether you can ask a question in it.
Read the topic pages and download the past papers before paying anything. If the free work is not good, the paid work will not be either.
Where Qatari students lose the most marks
These are the places marks go missing most often, taken from marking student scripts rather than from a textbook contents page. Each one is a specific habit, not a topic to revise again.
The most expensive misconception in IGCSE physics is that current is used up as it goes round a circuit. Current is the same everywhere in a series loop, and it splits at a junction in parallel.
Voltage is shared in series and the same across parallel branches. Write which rule applies before substituting numbers, because the calculation is easy and the setup is where the marks go.
A describe question asks what happens. An explain question asks why, and needs a physics reason. Answering a why question with a what earns nothing, no matter how correct it is.
Angles are measured from the normal, not from the surface, and the critical angle only exists going from dense to less dense. Draw the normal as a dashed line before reading any angle.
Energy is transferred or stored, it is not created, used up or lost. Cambridge mark schemes have tightened the accepted wording, and older textbook phrasing now costs marks.
A voltage is induced only when the magnetic field through the coil is changing. A magnet held still inside a coil induces nothing. Say what is moving and say that the field is changing, in that order.
The force on a current-carrying wire in a field increases with current and with field strength, and reverses if either reverses. Reversing both leaves it unchanged, which is the question examiners like to ask.
An LDR's resistance falls as light increases; a thermistor's resistance falls as temperature increases. Students memorise the component and forget which way the resistance goes, which reverses the whole circuit answer.
Which exam you are actually sitting
This is the question most students in Qatar get wrong, and it is worth settling in five minutes. British curriculum schools across the Gulf enter students for one of two different physics exams, and many schools do not publish which one on their website. Check your entry code with your school office.
- Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625. Core students sit Paper 1, Paper 3 and a practical paper; Extended students sit Paper 2, Paper 4 and a practical paper. The practical is either Paper 5, a real lab exam, or Paper 6, the written alternative to practical.
- Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1. Two written papers, Paper 1P and Paper 2P. The modular route uses 4WPH1 and 4WPH2.
- Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653, where physics is one third of a single award.
- Cambridge International AS and A Level Physics 9702, for students carrying on after IGCSE.
- Cambridge IGCSE 9-1 Physics 0972 is the same syllabus as 0625 with a 9 to 1 grade scale, and is offered in the UK administrative zone rather than the Gulf. If your school enters you for it, the 0625 past papers are the right practice papers.
Dates that matter for Qatar students
- Cambridge June 2026 IGCSE and O Level results were released at 05:00 UTC on 18 August 2026, which is 8am in Doha.
- Pearson Edexcel International GCSE summer 2026 results went to candidates on 20 August 2026.
- There is no January International GCSE series. Pearson ended it after January 2023, so the series are now summer and November only.
- Cambridge also runs a March series, but it is offered in India only and not in Qatar.
